Purpose :

Portrait for her daughter who’s turning 2 years old in a month & family photoshoot

Whether you’re a budding photographer or a parent looking to capture the perfect family moment, this guide will walk you through the entire process—from preparation and communication to getting the best shots during the session and aftercare. I’ll also share insights from a recent photoshoot with Trisha and her family, offering practical tips and tricks to help you enhance your skills and provide your clients or loved ones with beautiful, lasting memories. Let’s dive in!

1. COMMUNICATION  Before the photoshoot:

  • Confirm the date, time, and location (whether it’s indoors, outdoors, in the studio, or at the client’s home).

  • Monitor the weather closely and have a contingency plan in place.

  • Exchange references to finalise the desired style and any bespoke requests.

  • Provide styling advice to ensure outfits complement the chosen aesthetic or mood.

  • Discuss overtime and additional photo fees.

  • Take the time to learn more about the family to personalise the experience.

  • Request permission for sharing their images on social media.

  • The client will receive an invoice and booking confirmation email once payment is settled.

  • Kindly review our terms and conditions, or contact us via email or WhatsApp for any queries.

  • Mention that an assistant will be present during the session.

2. During the Photoshoot:

  • I recommend arriving approximately 15 minutes early to connect with the family, especially when young children are involved. Children may feel shy around strangers and the camera (We were 3 minutes late this time—our apologies!).

  • Bring toys, preferably ones that make noise, to capture the children’s attention when needed.

  • Be mindful of windows; backlighting can be tricky unless you're confident using flash or reflectors to manage it.

  • Capture some behind-the-scenes footage for social media or promotional use, which can also be gifted or sold to the client.

  • If the child becomes upset, shift focus to other family members.

  • Don’t forget a wide-angle lens for indoor shots; I personally love my 23mm F2 for this purpose.

  • Explore different angles and compositions to add variety to your shots.

  • Include a mix of close-ups and scenic shots if time permits.

3. AFTER the Photoshoot:

  • Confirm the delivery date of the final images.

  • Share a few edited samples to ensure the client is happy with the retouching.

  • Collect any outstanding payments following the session.

  • Review all images carefully to select the best ones for editing.

  • Final images will be available for download within 72 hours.

  • Request honest feedback from the client—this is essential for self-improvement, especially when self-employed.

  • Offer a referral discount for their friends and family on their next photoshoot.

  • Try to remember key dates like their child’s birthday to send a thoughtful message and keep in touch, ensuring you remain top of mind for future photography needs.

Thank you for joining me on this journey through the art of family photography. As you’ve seen, success lies not only in the technical aspects but also in your ability to connect with your clients, plan thoughtfully, and adapt to different situations. And pls remember TAKE YOUR TIME, photography is ART. NO RUSH! I hope these tips inspire you to capture more authentic and heartfelt moments.
